Scottish Snowcross Championships, Cairngorm Mountain, 17/18 April 2010

Written by sarah on April 15th, 2010

Skier and Boarder Cross – the event of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics hits Cairngorm Mountain on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 April 2010 with the inaugural Saab UK Challenge, Scottish Snowcross Championships.

This event provided by the highly regarded Aberdeen Snowsports Club and sponsored by Saab UK is the first and only one of its kind to be held in the United Kingdom and will see skiers and boarders racing head to head in an adrenalin and action packed knockout race along a course consisting of man-made and natural rollers, jumps, kickers and banked turns, all at high speed.

With age categories of 8-11, 12-15, 16-29 and 30+ there is a definite opportunity for all to compete.

Aberdeen Snowsports Club Chairman, Ewen MacLean, “Ski and Boarder Cross was the event of the Vancouver Olympics and one that captured the imagination of snowsports enthusiasts and the general public.  It’s a great spectacle and one that unites with alpine skiers, snowboarders and freestyle skiers all having skills that can be brought to the sport.”

Club Chair, Ewen, also said, “2010 has been a vintage ski season in Scotland with around 300,000 skier days sold at the Scottish Ski Resorts, the Saab UK Scottish Snowcross Challenge is an action packed, furious and fun end to the season”.

“We are also delighted to have the support of both Saab UK and ski-ing legend Alain Baxter making this race possible”

A Saab spokesman commented: “We’re really pleased to sponsor such an exciting event.   We’re thrilled to be working with Snowsport Scotland and believe our Scandinavian heritage matches perfectly with the skiers’ lifestyle.  Here at Saab we are always on the lookout for new and exciting opportunities and The Saab Challenge is a fantastic way for us to represent a youthful, independent-minded group of people.

Former Olympic Skier and BBC wintersports pundit Alain Baxter commented, “skier and boardercross was a huge success at the Vancouver Olympics and we are delighted to have the first national level Snowcross in Scotland this weekend, supported by a great brand like Saab. Saab were a key supporter of skiing during my development as a Skier and their support means a great deal to Scottish and British Snowsports.”

Insider Festival 18th-20th June 2010

Written by sarah on April 14th, 2010

If you go down to the woods today…

In April 2009 the owners of Inshriach House, Ord Ban Restaurant, The Old Bridge Inn and Backwoods Productions decided to have a party. They had a venue, a bunch of friends and just 6 weeks to convince the cream of Scottish folk and contemporary artists they were serious. They sprinkled in the finest local food, washed it down with tasty ales and called it The Insider.

The Insider returns in 2010, kicking off on the 17th June with a Festival of Firewood - a free public day organised in conjunction with the Cairngorms National Park promoting renewable resources and woodcraft - then continues from the 18th to the 20th with the festival proper.

We feel it is our duty to once again dish up the most talented of home grown musicians and serve them alongside the finest food in the valley, with whisky galore, welly-wanging, spit-roasts and bonfires, pimms on the lawn, cake-fights, lasers in the woods, ping-pong and sing songs the whole night long.

But we won’t stop there… we are also throwing in river adventures, workshops, storytelling; a whole new stage, a slew of incredible new bands, yurts-galore and a heavy dash of Insider magic…

Set in the gardens and grounds of the Inshriach estate, with a backdrop of the Cairngorm Mountains, the Insider promises to be a bohemian highland garden party of truly adventurous proportions.

The sun will shine again, folk will swim in the Spey (quite against the instructions of our health and safety division!) and bonfires and impromptu woodland piano jams will light up the night.

Ski Hire raises funds for British Heart Foundation - Highest Effort Ever for the British Heart Foundation

Written by sarah on March 2nd, 2010

Here is a piece and some pics on the fund raiser that CairnGorm’s Ski Hire Team did on Saturday 20th February to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

Katie Fortune has been a member of the ski hire team for 2 winter seasons and she lost her mother, Jane Fortune, in 2002 when she had a heart attack. Many members of her family have also been affected by heart conditions. The Ski Hire team wanted to support their colleague – Katie – who plans to run the London Marathon on the 25th April this year along with three other Aviemore based runners. So the whole hire team dressed up as the Village People and provided some unexpected, impromptu entertainment for ski hire customers over the last weekend of the half term holidays.

Customers rewarded them well for their efforts and they raised over £750 for the British Heart Foundation. Katie also has her own  personal fund raising page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/KatieFortune and she hopes  to bring the total raised to well over £3000.

The British Heart Foundation also commented that this is the Highest Foundraiser that has been held in the UK.

For further information please contact Katie Fortune on 077961 786074 or Tania Alliod 01479 861304

World Record Attempt Cairngorm in Kilts

Written by sarah on February 24th, 2010

World Record  Attempt

“CairnGorm in Kilts”

CairnGorm Mountain is attempting to set a world record for the largest number of kilted skiers/snowboarders skiing down a piste at once. The attempt will take place on Saturday 6th March at 11am and all money raised will be split between Maggie’s Highland and the Badenoch & Strathspey Schools Skiing Programme.

We are aiming to have 600 kilted skiers and snowboarders ski in a single consecutive line from the Ptarmigan Top Station at CairnGorm Mountain all the way down to car park level.

Ian Whitaker, Chief Executive at CAirnGorm Mountain said:

“Snow conditions this winter are so fantastic at CairnGorm Mountain that staff wanted to celebrate the skiing from top to bottom in a memorable way that would also involve the public. So far this year we have held two torch light descents but the “CairnGorm in Kilts” world record attempt would be unique to Scotland and Scottish Skiing. We hope that our customers will embrace the fun and also know that they are raising money for two great local causes.”

Participants should be competent intermediate / advanced skiers or snowboarders capable of skiing slowly and steadily from the top station down the Traverse, Coire Cas, Zig Zags and the lower slopes without stopping. (World record attempts require the line to be consecutive and a moving single line.)

To register your participation please go to the CairnGorm Web site and sign up using this link http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?agency-CAIRNGORM&organ_val=24897&schedule=list&event_val=KILT

Once you are singed up full details will be emailed directly to you. It is also possible for non participants to make a donation to Maggie’s by visiting this link http://www.justgiving.com/CairnGormMountain

In the event of poor weather on the 6th March the attempt will be made on Sunday 7th March (and again finally on the 13th March). Full updates and details will be posted on the CairnGorm Mountain web site.

For further details please contact : Tania Alliod 01479 861304 or 07890 734620

Some Top Tips for Visitors to Cairngorm Mountain over the February Half Term Holidays

Written by sarah on February 4th, 2010

Snow Conditions
At the time of writing, recent snowfall has resulted in excellent conditions for snow sports at CairnGorm Mountain for the half term holidays. Skiing is possible from top to bottom all 12 lifts are operating and all 39 runs are skiable. As always please visit our web site for the most up to date conditions and weather. Have fun  and stay safe.

The February Half Term holiday is always a busy time and due to the large number of visitors it is likely there will be queues for services like the ticket office, ski hire and ski school. We hope these top tips will help customers plan their visit and get the most out of their stay.  Please check electronic signs on the ski road for car park status updates. A public bus service runs from Aviemore Station on a regular basis we would encourage the public to use this service if car parks are full. Car sharing is also highly recommended so we can maximize car park space.

Opening Times: (from Thursday 11thth February for the half term holiday period until Sun 21st Feb). First public train up is 9.00 am. (Other uplift will open earlier subject to conditions). Competent skiers and snow boarders are encouraged to use the surface lift system (pomas and t bars) to reach higher runs and relieve congestion on the funicular.

Last train up 3.45 pm. Last train down 4.30 pm. (Last trains may run later depending on light and weather conditions)

The Ticket Office, Cas Bar and Equipment Hire will be open from 8.00am daily. On a busy day we can run out of hire equipment  by mid morning so get here early. There are other hire outlets in the area so if you are not an early riser we strongly advise you to hire off-site. A list of Hire outlets nearby is detailed below:

Outdoor Discovery: 01479 811066 or 811776 (on the ski road at Inverdruie)

You should purchase a train ticket from the ticket office and sledge tickets can be purchased from the Shop at the Top located in the Ptarmigan Stop Station building. The presence of streams and rivers under the snow pack makes it dangerous to sledge other than in the designated area.  Non skiing visitors are advised to plan their visit after 11am and before 3pm.

Buying Tickets.

Non-skiing visitors and sledging visitors will require a funicular ticket to ride the train.

Snowsports visitors require a skiing ticket – this includes unlimited use of all lifts and the train.

News release from Ski Scotland

Written by sarah on December 23rd, 2009

EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR SKIERS

Scotland’s weather has delivered an early Christmas present for skiers and snowboarders, with four of the country’s five mountain ski areas already operating, and the other expecting to open very soon. And with the snow and cold weather forecast to continue through the rest of the week and over the weekend, there should be plenty of opportunities to work off the excesses of Christmas dinner, cake and mince pies with some healthy skiing or boarding at CairnGorm, Nevis Range, the Lecht or Glenshee. Glencoe is also expected to open over the holiday period; although there is enough snow, the new owners have had to condense six months’ work into a very busy six week period, and a few extra days are still required before they’re ready to welcome skiers and boarders.

Heather Negus, Chair of ski-scotland, said, “there has been a fantastic early start to the Scottish ski season this winter – in fact, it’s the best since 1999! CairnGorm has already been operating for a few weeks, and this is the first time since 2003 that Nevis Range has opened for snowsports before Christmas. The forecast is also really promising for some great fun and wicked sliding over the holiday period.”

For the first time, the five mountain ski areas are offering an all-area five-day ski pass. These are valid for any five consecutive days at any of the five areas, and can be bought at any of the ticket offices: CairnGorm Mountain, Glencoe Mountain, Glenshee, The Lecht and Nevis Range. The new pass has been produced in response to customer demand, and will allow skiers and boarders to sample each area, stick with one, or follow the best snow and road reports. The pass can be used for five days at one ski area, one day at each ski area – or any combination - the only requirement is that the five days are consecutive.

Heather continued, “we’d also like to remind our customers to check road conditions before they leave – remember that some of our mountain ski areas are served by Britain’s highest roads, at well over 2,000ft above sea level. This can easily be checked on the official website www.ski-scotland.com where you can also check on lifts due to open and snow conditions, with webcam images, before you leave home, or on your mobile. And if the roads north are snowbound, there’s also the chance to whet your appetite for mountain skiing or boarding, in the Central Belt of Scotland, at SNO!zone in Glasgow.”

ENDS

Note to editors:

·         For winter 2009/10, the 5-day all-area ski pass is only available for adults, cost £115. All five ski areas already offer good deals for children of different ages, with prices ranging from £10 for one day to £64 for 5 days, and offer family day tickets ranging from £70 to £90.

·         Owners of all-area ski passes are advised that the pass is not transferable, and they therefore may be asked to show ID at individual ski areas. Otherwise, terms and conditions of use are those applied by the ski area where the ticket is being used.

·         Winter 2008-9 attracted many people to the Scottish snowsports areas who have not visited before, or not for a long time. All the areas reported a high number of first-time visitors who normally ski or snowboard abroad – a positive spin-off from the current economic climate.

·         The number of people who skied or snowboarded in Scotland in winter 2008-9 was 159,885, worth around £4M to the snowsports centres and at least £12M to the Scottish economy.
